Stark Raving Mad!

Top 10 Angriest Video Game Characters of All Time!

Night Mode

Wrath is one of the seven deadly sins due to the many physical and mental consequences it can bring. Left unchecked, it can impair a person’s cognitive control over their own behavior. Feelings of anger can speed up your heart rate, elevate your blood pressure, and cause increased levels of adrenaline. The emotion often triggers as part of a natural “fight or flight” response, and it can play an important role in self preservation. The characters on this list allow themselves to become slaves to their anger, however. They are often motivated by vengeance, and wrath is their defining attribute. Different people manage their anger in different ways, but these individuals resort to aggressive violence and wanton destruction. Whether they’re raising their voices or decapitating their enemies, these characters are defined by ire and indignation.

Examples: The Incredible Hulk, Broly, Donald Duck

Wiggler

10

Wiggler

Mario Series

Mario’s enemies respond in various ways when they are attacked. Goombas are squashed, for instance, while Koopas are evicted from their shells. Wigglers become more dangerous when someone tries to hurt them, however. Wigglers are passive creatures who mind their own business, and there’s nothing threatening about their friendly smiles. (They literally grow flowers from their heads!) If Mario and his pals decide to jump on them, the mild-mannered caterpillars will become a real problem. In their enraged state, Wigglers turn red and stomp around like angry children while steam is emitted from their bodies. Every character on this list is angry for a reason, but we get to see Wiggler’s wrath play out in real time. They’re impervious to most attacks when they’re infuriated, and they could be likened to the Incredible Hulk in this regard.

Red J. Bird

9

Red J. Bird

Angry Birds Series

The angry birds are exactly what they’re purported to be. While most of the individuals on this list are willing to throw hands, the birds go the extra mile by throwing themselves! When evil pigs steal their eggs and retreat to their fortresses, the birds use their bodies as veritable wrecking balls. All of the birds are filled with rage (and rightfully so), but Red J. Bird is being singled out for a few reasons. The desert cardinal is the main protagonist of the series and has been identified as the angriest bird of them all. He apparently had a short temper before the eggs were taken, and he always had trouble getting along with others. He didn’t start smashing castles until the pigs gave him a reason to, but his hair-trigger temper is partially informed by his troubled childhood. Red had a chip on his shoulder before he even had shoulders!

Scorpion

8

Scorpion

Mortal Kombat Series

Hanzo Hasashi is a skilled assassin who was devoted to his family and clan. After he was massacred with the rest of his ninja brethren, he re-emerged from the depths of the Netherrealm to seek vengeance. With the memories of his past obfuscated, Hanzo returned to Earth as a single-minded specter named Scorpion who had a flaming skull-for-a-head. (If Ghost Rider and Spawn had a kid, it would probably look a lot like Scorpion.) The undead warrior pursued a rival ninja who he believed had wronged him, and he ultimately murdered him in retaliation. Unfortunately, he was being used as a pawn the entire time and ended up killing the wrong man. (Oops!) This only served to rejuvenate his thirst for vengeance, and he simply redirected his anger at the real culprit. The corporeal spirit is blinded by rage, but it also gives him a sense of purpose.

Trevor Philips

7

Trevor Philips

Grand Theft Auto V

A dark man with a troubled past, Trevor Philips was raised by an abusive mother and a string of violent step-fathers. Sadly, his mental problems are exasperated by alcohol and meth. He lives in a trailer park surrounded by biker gangs, and he makes his money selling drugs, running guns, and robbing banks. He’s a former airman and a skilled sniper who is surprisingly good at planning heists. At the same time, he’s prone to psychotic outbursts. He lashes out in anger, threatens people with sexual assault, and literally uses murder as a coping mechanism. He actually enjoys killing (and even torturing) others, and his anger serves as a source of strength. He’s almost invincible when he’s on a rampage, and he becomes more destructive to boot. His bullets are twice as powerful when he’s enraged. I can honestly say that I’ve never been that mad.

Luca Blight

6

Luca Blight

Suikoden II

When Luca Blight was a child, his family was captured by bandits. His father ran off like a coward, so Luca was forced to watch as unspeakable acts were committed against his mother. This incident turned him into a genocidal maniac. As the Prince of Highland and the commander of its military, Luca is regarded as an unstoppable monster. The “Mad Prince” revels in bloodlust and wonton destruction, and he takes pride in the fact that he has kill thousands of people. He has nothing but contempt for his subjects, and likens them to pigs and maggots. He also slaughters them like livestock and takes pleasure in torching their villages to the ground. His depravity knows no bounds, and he’s completely unhinged. He holds onto his anger until his last breath, and he continues to hurl insults at his enemies even as arrows rain down upon him.

Mr. Resetti

5

Mr. Resetti

Animal Crossing Series

Mr. Resetti seems relatively tame compared to the murderous maniacs on this list, but it’s important to emphasize that there are many ways for an individual to channel their anger. Some people choose to decapitate their enemies, while others will simply use strong language. Resetti’s purpose in Animal Crossing is to educate players on the importance of saving their progress. Resetting the game(s) without saving can cause all sorts of complications, so Resetti scolds players to discourage this sort of behavior. Players will be forced to listen to his long-winded outbursts when they jump back into the game, and his anger will compound if his warnings fall on deaf ears. You do not want to be on the receiving end of one of his all-caps talking-tos! Even though Resetti has mellowed out in recent years, he’s still famed for his short temper.

Doomguy

4

Doomguy

DOOM Series

DOOM is centered around an unnamed space marine who was sent to Mars to do menial work after putting his commanding officer in a body cast. During his deployment, scientists accidentally opened up a portal to hell. (Oops!) Doomguy acted as a one-man army against the demonic denizens and directed his anger at the invaders. At the same time, he was pissed off at the morons who were trying to harness a power they didn’t understand. He lost his family (and pet rabbit) during the invasion, and this set him on a path of eternal vengeance. His anger is so pronounced that it’s used as a gameplay mechanic in DOOM Eternal. In this outing, Doomguy has extra lives because he’s literally too angry to die! Whether you know him as Doomguy, Doom Slayer, or the Unchained Predator, his reputation as a single-minded killing machine precedes him.

Zero

3

Zero

Drakengard 3

Zero’s mother was a vile woman who sold her into prostitution at a young age. After she killed everyone at the brothel to secure her freedom, Zero tried to settle down into a normal life. She found a man to live with, but he betrayed her and tried to sell her again! Understandably upset, Zero started killing random people indiscriminately. She was so blinded by anger that she couldn’t even explain why she was pissed off in the first place. Things were dialed up even further after she was possessed by a parasitic flower that wanted her to destroy all of humanity. The flower fractured Zero’s personality and spawned five new women to help carry out this goal, so Zero took it upon herself to kill her so-called sisters. More so than anyone else on this list, Zero is justified in her anger. The poor girl was clearly dealt a bad hand in life.

Kratos

2

Kratos

God of War Series

Kratos is a Spartan warrior who is famed for his ruthless aggression. After he begged the gods for even more strength, he got more than he bargained for. Unable to control the newfound power, Kratos blindly slaughtered everyone in his path – including his own wife and daughter. (Oops!) The ashes of his family were affixed to his skin, serving as a constant reminder of his profound failure. Vowing revenge, Kratos made it a personal goal to bring down the Gods of Mount Olympus. With a scowl on his face and a pair of chained blades grafted to his arms, he sliced up hydras, attacked innocent bystanders, and literally ripped the heads off other gods with his bare hands. God of War has become something of a sad dad simulator in recent years, but early entries in the series were largely defined by the unbridled rage of Kratos.

Asura

1

Asura

Asura’s Wrath

Asura is a demigod and one of eight Guardian Generals who was tasked with protecting the world of Gaea. Unfortunately, the other generals killed his wife, kidnapped his daughter, and framed him for the murder of the Emperor. They killed Asura too, but he was so pissed off that he came back from the dead to extract revenge! Asura spends most of his time screaming and punching things, and his boiling rage accumulates with each passing battle. He literally glows red while powering up, and he can even transform into a six-armed monster if he gets angry enough. Although he never loses his moral compass, he becomes increasingly reckless and impulsive during his adventure. The developers set an expectation by calling the game Asura’s Wrath, and it proves to be an appropriate title. No one on this list is more profoundly linked with wrath than Asura.
