Jealous Much?

Top 10 Most Envious Video Game Characters of All Time!

Night Mode

This list looks at gaming’s most envious and jealous characters. Strictly speaking, envy and jealousy are two different concepts. Envy is a desire to have what someone else has while jealousy is the concern that what you already have will be taken away. The terms will be used interchangeably for the purpose of this list, however, because that’s how they’re used in common parlance. Benign envy plays an important role in human progress, and the natural desire to “keep up with the Joneses” can be a motivating factor for many people. Malicious forms of envy are more negative, of course, and they can cause feelings of inadequacy or unhappiness. Those who are overwhelmed by jealousy may act irrationally, so it’s important for people to keep their emotions in check. Envy is one of the seven deadly sins, after all, and two of the ten commandments deal with the concept. The characters on this list manage their envy in unhealthy ways, and they allow jealousy to become the basis of their personality.

Examples: The Evil Queen, Scar, Prince Humperdinck

Kenny Dermot

10

Kenny Dermot

Dead Rising 3

Hero syndrome is a psychological disorder wherein an individual creates dangerous situations in order to be recognized as a savior. When Kenny Dermot finds himself in the midst of a zombie outbreak, he decides it’s the perfect venue to prove his worth. After Kenny is rescued by a young mechanic named Nick Ramos, he develops something of an inferiority complex. Rather than expressing gratitude for Nick’s heroic actions, the basement-dwelling psychopath decides to steal his identity! To that end, he changes his appearance and starts calling himself Kick. He then kidnaps an innocent young woman and places her in harm’s way in a misguided attempt to play the hero. When Nick tries to talk some sense into him, Kenny responds by trying to murder him! Kenny is the embodiment of insecurity, and his desire for approval twisted his perception of reality.

Kain Highwind

9

Kain Highwind

Final Fantasy IV

Rejection is a natural part of life and feelings of unrequited love are nothing to be ashamed of. Things become depressing when a person chooses to stay in the friendzone rather than moving on with their life. Kain Highwind was madly in love with a white mage named Rosa, but she was interested in his best friend Cecil. After watching their relationship bloom, Kain lost his mind and tried to kill Cecil. When he regained his composure, Kain went into self-imposed exile while Rosa and Cecil were happily married as King and Queen. Instead of hitting a gym and starting a Tinder profile, Kain chose to live like a hermit in order to keep his jealousy in check. His negative emotions even created an alter ego that tried to murder Cecil (again) in an ill-conceived bid to win Rosa’s heart. How pathetic is that? Get over it, dude. She’s just not that into you!

Queen Vanessa

8

Queen Vanessa

A Hat in Time

In her youth, Queen Vanessa was romantically involved with a young prince. Sadly, she destroyed the relationship with her obsessive behavior. Vanessa didn’t want to share his attention with anyone or anything. (She was upset that he had a female teacher, for example, and she even contemplated banning bacon because he enjoyed it so much.) In one instance, the prince was buying her flowers from a merchant on the street. Vanessa witnessed this from afar and deduced that he must be cheating on her with the florist. At this point, she decided that if she couldn’t have him, then no one could. Having lost all semblance of sanity, she kidnapped the prince and chained him up in the basement. The jealousy-fueled heartbreak was self-inflicted, and it ultimately turned Vanessa into a shadowy creature that was resolved to a life of loneliness.

Envy

7

Envy

Darksiders III

In Darksiders III, the Seven Deadly Sins are viewed as the enemies of Creation itself. Although the hostile beings were imprisoned by the Four Horseman centuries before the Apocalypse, they were eventually released onto the war-torn Earth. As the manifestation of jealousy and covetous desire, Envy is obsessed with material possessions and power. The wretched woman literally wants everything that Earth has to offer, so she seeks to claim the entire planet as her own. She covets the strength of the Four Horsemen, she’s envious of how much potential humans have, and she even resents the other members of the Seven Deadly Sins. She goes so far as to steal abilities from her siblings in an effort to become even stronger. Envy lacks the discipline to control her newfound powers, but that doesn’t make them any less enticing to her.

Hugh Darrow

6

Hugh Darrow

Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Hugh Darrow is a visionary philanthropist and the recipient of the Nobel Prize. He developed an interest in robotics at a young age and began researching mechanical augmentation with the goal of improving human capabilities. Ironically, Darrow is incompatible with the augmentation prosthetics due to a rare genetic anomaly. In time, he grows to resent the technology he developed and those who benefit from it. Darrow requires a cane to walk around, so he convinces himself that all humans should evolve naturally rather than relying on technology. With that, the father of augmentation activates a universal signal that will literally drive augmented humans insane. He amplifies a conspiracy theory about the Illuminati to rationalize his actions, but he’s just a bitter old man who is jealous that he can’t benefit from the future that he created.

Elijah Madnar

5

Elijah Madnar

Snatcher

Elijah Madnar is a genetics specialist who was working on a Soviet robotics program alongside an abducted American named Jamie Lorraine. Another scientist named Gillian Seed was brought in to help, and Jamie soon fell in love with him. Elijah was infatuated with Jamie, and his feelings only intensified as he watched her relationship evolve from the sidelines. When Gillian was revealed to be a CIA operative, the entire project was put in jeopardy. He had lost Jamie and his livelihood on account of Gillian’s actions. He could have tamed his jealousy with vodka tonics and one-night stands. Instead, he released a virus that wiped out half the world’s population! He had planned on living with Jamie in isolation, but he kept her in a cryogenic pod and surrendered to nihilism. He then decided that humans should be replaced by his killer robots for some reason.

Ryōbi

4

Ryōbi

Senran Kagura Series

It’s quite common for teenage girls to have insecurities about the size of their breasts. This issue is magnified in Ryōbi’s case, since almost all the other girls in her school are blessed with massive racks. She convinces herself that breasts are the source of shinobi powers, and this gives her an inferiority complex that manifests itself in various ways. At times, Ryōbi simply accentuates her giant ass in an attempt to detract from her perceived inadequacies. In other instances, she succumbs to the jealousy and actively fights girls who have big tits. She’s always looking for ways to increase her bustline, but she will outright murder anyone who tries to advise her in this matter. Ryōbi already had the ideal body type, but she was too blinded by jealousy to realize this. Sadly, she eventually resorts to excessive padding in order to appear more endowed.

Cia

3

Cia

Hyrule Warriors

On the surface, it seems like Cia has everything going for her. (Beauty? Intelligence? Huge tits? Cia has it all!) Unfortunately, she’s smitten with the one guy she can’t have. The entire plot of Hyrule Warriors revolves around her insane jealousy. As a powerful sorceress with the ability to see through time, Cia is tasked with maintaining the balance of the Triforce. She becomes distracted from her duties after observing a legendary swordsman named Link, who proves himself a hero in numerous timelines. Cia is infatuated by the brave knight, but it’s apparent that he is bound to Princess Zelda by destiny. The feelings of unrequited love are strong enough to fracture her personality and corrupt her heart. She also declares war on Hyrule in an ill-conceived bid to shatter the bond between Link and Zelda! The girl’s thirsty as fuck.

Parsee Mizuhashi

2

Parsee Mizuhashi

Touhou Project

Parsee Mizuhashi is a spirit who guards the bridge between the surface and the underworld. Her attempts to discourage travelers from crossing over the bridge have made her a reviled figure, and this causes her to harbor intense feelings of jealousy. She’s jealous of the light above ground, she’s jealous of the wind, and she’s jealous of literally everyone she encounters regardless of their situation. She’s even jealous of individuals who aren’t jealous! Jealousy often begets more jealousy, and this is certainly true in Parsee’s case. She’s a literal green-eyed monster who feeds off jealousy and envy. Her feelings are so intense that she gains the ability to make others feel jealous too! Although she puts on a happy face, her friendly demeanor is just a charade. Miss Mizuhashi is the embodiment of jealousy, and she secretly resents everyone she meets.

Monika

1

Monika

Doki Doki Literature Club!

Monika is the president of her school’s literature club and a voice of encouragement for her classmates. Unfortunately, her attitude changes after she realizes that she’s living in a visual novel. This is especially troubling, since she isn’t even one of the protagonist’s romance options. In an effort to gain more attention from the player, Monika edits the game’s variables to make the other girls unlikable. She’s resolved to amplify their negative traits, but she later decides to delete the other girls outright. After she eliminates the competition, she disables various menu options and makes it impossible for the player to skip her dialogue. Her jealousy is so intense that she alters the fabric of reality itself. I’ve never met someone so clingy, and the only way to shut her up is by deleting her folder from your computer’s file directory!
